Petroglyphs or markings on the pahoehoe lava formations can be found in the Petroglyph Preserve. Two of the most common forms of petroglyph carvings at this site are the puka or lua, which appear as dots, cup marks, or holes, and the ring or circle carvings. Other more recognizable carved images are human figures in various styles, canoes, a turtle, a crab claw, fishhooks, and even a 19th century cowboy on horseback.
