Kamehameha the Great is believed to have been born here at Kapakai, Kokoiki, in 1758. According to chants, he was then taken to nearby Mo'okini Heiau for his postbirth ritual. Prophecy had already spoken of this child, "the lone one" or "the lonely one," as having a future of greatness, becoming the first and only chief to unite the entire Hawaiian Islands. As a young child, he was taken to Waipi'o Valley in order to hide him from the ruling chief of Hawai'i who feared the prophecy.
